*** Synopsis

It’s 1955. Stalin has been dead two years, but not even Khrushchev’s thaw can prevent Komsomol shock troops hounding fans of American rhythms and fashion. The student Mels (Marx-Engels-Lenin-Stalin) finds himself part of their crowd when he falls in love with Polya. He joins a gang of hipsters who meet up on Moscow’s “Broadway” (Gorky/Tverskaya street), then gets himself an eccentric outfit and is soon a hit on the dance floor as well. He is expelled from college and finds himself a substitute – the saxophone. He now goes by the name Mel and has the lovely Polya by his side... Retro-musical scenes alternate with sequences in which the director uses witty hyperbole to present the state of mind and lifestyle of various levels of the Soviet population. The young people’s craving for forbidden fruit will leave both an intoxicating and bitter taste in their mouths. Mel’s mentor Fred goes back to being Fyodor as soon as his high-ranking father fixes him up with a job in America. But he comes back to Moscow with bad news: they’re wearing different fashions over there and there’s no sign of any rebellion… ***

PROCHAIN ET DERNIER RENDEZ-VOUS DE LA SAISON :
Mardi 11 Juin : THE COMMITMENTS de Alan Parker (Irlande)

Our new Common Languages Centre illustrates the cooperation between the establishments of Paris-Saclay. CentraleSupélec, lENS Paris-Saclay and the University of Paris Sud are working together on cultural projects which allow us to optimize and develop innovative and varied teaching methods.

Our cultural activities team is delighted to welcome you to this third "movie night" organized in partnership with  the University of Paris-Saclay and the associations Rêve Ensemble and TheMovieLightProject. It is one of a series of original version film showings  followed each time by an open discussion. The theme of this first term has been "It’s a Weird World", exploring science-fiction and futuristic films, made in English ("The Handmaid's Tale" shown on 29/09), Spanish ("Mientras Duermes" shown on 23/10), and French ("The Big Everything" shown on 04/12). Our second term, launched on January thanks to Comète and the Best Foreign Film Category #2018, will bring you films in other languages, including Arab, Japanese and Russian, around a new theme : YOUTH. Our aim is to help you discover films that are rarely seen in cinemas and to experience them in their original version (subtitled). Our discussions take place in French, English and the target language to enable everyone to express themselves.

The showing of "Hipsters" will take place on Tuesday 21st May in the amphitheatre of the Common Languages Centre on the third floor of the Eiffel building on the CentraleSupélec campus. You are welcome to join us from 7:30p.m. (a meeting point on the ground floor will help you find your way up to the venue).  The screening is scheduled to begin at 8:00p.m.

We look forward to welcoming  you all to celebrate Youth with us, culture and the movies !
