In English Gilles Ponchel is a full professor in Biopharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology at the Université Paris-Sud/Université Paris-Saclay, France. He is currently heading a research group focused on the «Understanding and Crossing of Biological Barriers », and more specifically on the : (i) identification of biological barriers, including epithelial and immune barriers, (ii) understanding of their impact in drug delivery and pharmacokinetics and (iii) design of innovative drug delivery systems, including nanomedicines and able to by-pass these barriers. including, carefully engineered nanomedicines made of tailored polymers, proteins, cyclodextrins, lipids. Gilles Ponchel is world-renowned in the field of mucosal and bioadhesive drug delivery systems. He has had a pioneering role in elucidating the complex biophysical mechanisms by which nanoparticles interact dynamically with the intestinal membrane. The application of his discoveries concerning the phenomena of mucoadhesion made it possible to envisage the oral delivery of certain active molecules whereas it was held until now impossible by this route. More recently, Gilles Ponchel focused on the combined role of the morphology (shape) and the surface molecular topology of nanomedicine on their ADME pharmacokinetic behavior. He is convinced that only the understanding and mastery of the phenomena of recognition (or non-recognition) of biological entities will make possible a full use of the potential of nanomedicine. Finally, Gilles Ponchel is actively involved the transfer of innovation to the pharmaceutical industry.
